DiversityInc Innovation Fest! Presentation by Kaiser Permanente: Diversity & Health Film Series and Foreign-Language Interpreters

February 23, 2012 3:37 pm

The healthcare organization had a real problem—language barriers were causing liability risks and hired interpreters were costly and often ineffective. The solution? Train its bilingual employees (10 percent of the staff) as interpreters for culturally competent healthcare information, especially on the telephone.

The program almost doubled the percentage of patients with limited English who received interpreters and saved the company about $1,300 by not using outside vendors.

Kaiser also created a Diversity & Health Film Series to develop a more culturally competent workforce and improve patient/provider relationships. The series has won awards and has dramatically improved awareness by dispelling myths and stereotypes.

Kaiser Permanente is No. 3 in the 2012 DiversityInc Top 50
